student reading book The City Libraries collection contains over 900,000 items, including an extensive range of fiction and non-fiction books. But did you know that the libraries also hold:

  • more than 35,000 CDs including popular, classical and new age music
  • 110,000 DVDs, including TV series, movies and educational documentaries
  • almost 22,000 fiction and non-fiction audio books on CD
  • an extensive range of musical scores for vocals, piano, guitar and a variety of other instruments
  • a collection of more than 640 popular magazine titles
  • an adult literacy collection designed to assist customers develop their literacy skills
  • around 10,000 titles in Chinese, Japanese and Italian languages, with additional community languages supplied via a loan arrangement with the State Library of Queensland
  • over 20,000 graphic novels
  • a great collection of eBooks for all readers, available 24/7 from anywhere with an internet connection - download and read from your mobile device, smart phone or MP3 player via our online resources 
  • literally thousands of magazines, journals and newspapers, as well as a number of major encyclopedias via our online resources.

The acquisition and distribution of the library collection is managed by the Collection Services staff who have responsibility for the selection, ordering, receiving, invoicing, cataloguing, and ensuring the appropriate packaging of all library items.

Suggested items for purchase

All library members are welcome to suggest materials for consideration for purchase via the Suggest a purchase link on the catalogue. Suggestions for purchase are evaluated against our basic selection criteria and the scope of the collection. Material not suitable for purchase may be obtained on inter-library loan.

To ensure copies of popular new titles are added to the collection as quickly as possible, City Libraries has standing order arrangements with suppliers. This means that new books in these categories are automatically supplied to our libraries as soon as they are available for distribution in Australia.
