Solid Waste Strategy 2024

As Gold Coasters, we generate nearly 600,000 tonnes of waste every year. It’s a growing issue, which is why, with the community’s help, we’ve developed the Solid Waste Strategy 2024.

Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) impacts

There will be new restrictions in place across all Waste and Recycling Centres (WRCs) from Saturday 11 April. These measures have been introduced in the interest of the health and safety of our community and City officers during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. Residential customers are strongly advised to restrict their visits to WRCs for essential waste services only. This includes:
    • disposal of hazardous waste that may be no longer safe to store at home, e.g. car tyres, car batteries, paint, pool chemicals, bleach, gas bottles and herbicides
    • disposal of waste that could create a health concern, e.g. putrescible household waste.
  2. Commercial customers can attend the Molendinar, Tipplers, Stapylton and Reedy Creek WRCs at any time during opening hours, however these sites will be inaccessible for residential customers between the hours of 7am - 9am daily. This is to minimise the impact of increased residential use on small businesses. Any customer who enters the facilities during these times will pay associated fees and State Government Waste Disposal Levy charges.
  3. To minimise delays, residential green waste will ONLY be accepted at WRCs with 'Green waste drop and go' which includes Coomera, Molendinar, Merrimac and Reedy Creek.
  4. To minimise congestion at WRCs and Green waste drop and go stations, vehicles will be limited to 'odd and even' dates of the month matching the first digit of their vehicle registration number.
    • If the first digit of your number plate is an odd number, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 or a personalised plate, you may only visit on odd dates, for example 15 April.
    • Alternatively, if your first digit is an even number 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0 you may only visit on even dates, for example 14 April.
    • Vehicles without digits on their number plate and all personalised plates will be treated as odd numbers.
    • Only vehicle registrations will be considered, not trailer registrations.
    • The odd and even system does not apply to commercial customers.
  5. No e-waste is being accepted at any WRCs at this time.
  6. All City-owned recycling markets are temporarily closed.

There will be increased security at all our Centres to ensure people are following these new restrictions.
