Local government elections

Polling day is Saturday 28 March 2020 and polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm.

It is compulsory for all enrolled electors to vote in this election. You can check or update your enrolment details at the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) website.

The following information is provided for the benefit of electors and candidates for the 2020 Local Government election.

Please note: The Electoral Commission of Queensland conducts all Council elections. All enquiries about the upcoming election should be forwarded to that body.

Election 2020 timetable

  • 22 February 2020 - Notice of election
  • 22 February to 3 March - Candidate nominations
  • 28 February - close of electoral rolls
  • 16 March - postal vote applications close
  • 16 to 27 March - early voting (in person)
  • 28 March - Election day

'How to vote' cards

Voters can view 'How to vote' cards for candidates on the ECQ website. The ECQ website publishes all how to vote cards approved by the Electoral Commission for distribution on polling day for the 2020 Local Government Elections. 

Early voting (16 to 27 March)

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has established 10 pre-poll booths on the Gold Coast:

  • Returning Officer’s office at 6/53 Township Drive, Burleigh Heads
  • Helensvale North Early Voting Centre, 4/54 Siganto Drive, Helensvale
  • Helensvale South Early Voting Centre, Helensvale Community Centre, 31 Discover Drive, Helensvale
  • Ormeau Centre, 3 Cuthbert Drive, Ormeau
  • Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, 296 Nerang Broadbeach Road, Carrara
  • Southport Community Centre, 6 Lawson Street, Southport
  • Albert Waterways Community Centre, cnr Hooker and Sunshine Boulevards, Mermaid Waters
  • Show Society, Mudgeeraba Showgrounds, 115 Mudgeeraba Road, Worongary
  • Fradgley Hall Community Centre, Park Avenue, Burleigh Heads
  • Runaway Bay Community Centre, Lae Drive, Runaway Bay

In addition, Gold Coast electors may cast a pre-poll vote in Brisbane at:

Sherwood Room, Ground Floor,
Brisbane City Hall
Adelaide Street, Brisbane

Pre-poll centres will be open from 16 to 27 March 2020. Any elector may cast a pre-poll ballot. A full list of addresses, telephone numbers and opening hours for the pre-poll centres will be available shortly on the ECQ website.

Postal voting

The application for a postal vote can be made via the ECQ website or phone 1300 881 665.

Postal vote applications close at 7pm Monday, 16 March 2020. You can apply to receive a postal vote by completing the postal vote application form or apply online, both via the ECQ website. Voting must be completed by 6pm on election day. The ECQ must receive your completed ballot no later than 5pm Tuesday, 7 April, 2020.

ECQ will send postal votes after the ballot paper draw on Wednesday, 4 March 2020, which determines the order candidates' names appear on the ballot papers.

Candidate nominations and ballot

Candidates for the election must have nominated by 12 noon on 3 March 2020. The draw for positions on the ballot papers will be conducted at the office of the Returning Officer - date to be advised.

A full list of candidates will be available from the Returning Officer once nominations have closed.

Polling booths

The ECQ will provide a list of polling booths for the 2020 Local Government elections after 2 March 2020.

The Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) is responsible for conducting State government elections across Queensland.

Polling day for the last Queensland state elections was Saturday 25 November 2017.
