Creative GC
Although best known for its beaches and theme parks, the Gold Coast is increasingly becoming recognised as a major cultural city. ABS data from 2001 show that 3.4 per cent of Gold Coast workers are employed in the arts, entertainment and creative sectors – as a percentage of total workforce this is second only to Sydney, and well above the national average of 2.3 per cent.
Add to the mix over 300 community arts and cultural organisations, and a significant calendar of arts and cultural events, and the Gold Coast appears less like a cultural desert, and more and more like a cultural oasis!
With a host of venues to enjoy arts and culture, residents and visitors can also appreciate our unique cultural identity and heritage out in the community – from viewing the public art that beautifies our parks and foreshore walkways, to checking out the art and craft on sale at weekend markets or celebrating our culture at a range of exciting events including regular music in our parks – the city really is Creative GC.
